Alpe d'Huez sits on a wide, south-facing balcony at 1,860 m above the Oisans valley, and it is one of the sunniest big resorts in the Alps — locals call it l'Île au Soleil, the island in the sun. The linked area covers around 250 km of piste served by some 68 lifts, spreading down to Oz, Vaujany and Auris.
It is best known for the Sarenne, a 16 km black run from the 3,330 m Pic Blanc that is among the longest in the world, but the resort is far broader than that: wide open beginner slopes right in the village, a glacier at the top, and a serious lift-served vertical of over 2,000 m. Winteride drives you in from Geneva, Lyon or Grenoble.
