Megève was created in the 1920s by the Rothschild family as a French answer to St Moritz, and it still feels that way: a cobbled medieval centre, horse-drawn carriages, and some of the best restaurants in the Alps.
It sits at 1,113 m and is the centrepiece of Evasion Mont-Blanc, around 445 km of linked piste with Saint-Gervais, Combloux and Les Contamines, all of it in full view of Mont Blanc. The skiing is gentle and beautifully wooded rather than extreme, which suits families and unhurried skiers. Winteride runs from Geneva in about an hour and a quarter.
