Serre Chevalier stretches for some 15 km along the Guisane valley between Briançon and Le Monêtier-les-Bains, a string of old villages rather than a single resort, with around 250 km of piste above them.
Being in the Southern Alps it gets noticeably more sunshine than the northern resorts, and the skiing is unusually well wooded — a real advantage on a bad-weather day. Briançon at the bottom is a fortified UNESCO town, which gives the area a character most ski resorts do not have. Winteride serves it from Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva.
