Avoriaz is built on a cliff edge at 1,800 m and is completely car-free — luggage moves by horse-drawn sleigh or snowcat, and almost every apartment opens straight onto snow.
Its altitude makes it the most snow-sure resort in the Portes du Soleil, around 600 km of piste across France and Switzerland, and it has long been a centre for freestyle skiing and snowboarding with several terrain parks.
