Chamonix sits at 1,035 m directly beneath Mont Blanc, and it is less a purpose-built ski station than a real alpine town with two centuries of mountaineering history behind it. Rather than one linked domain, it has a series of separate areas up the valley — Grands Montets, Brévent-Flégère, Les Houches and Balme — reached by a free ski bus.
The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to 3,842 m for the Vallée Blanche, a 20 km glacier descent that is the reason many skiers come at all. Chamonix rewards strong skiers and anyone who wants a town with restaurants, bars and life beyond the pistes. Winteride runs from Geneva in a little over an hour.
